Injectables.The stigma of sticking a needle in your face is gone, but from Botox to Juvéderm, not everyone knows the intricacies between the major and minor players that make up the injectables industry. Don’t worry— we’re breaking out our white lab coats and safety goggles to explain the differences between Neurotoxins, Dermal Fillers, and Biostimulators.Let’s start with NeurotoxinsWhile the word Neurotoxin may sound scary, it doesn’t have to be! Botulinum toxin, for example, is the active ingredient in most injectables. In the 1950s, scientists discovered that this naturally occurring Neurotoxin decreased muscle activity by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. With the injected muscle unable to contract, the treated wrinkles relax and soften for up to six months. The most common Neurotoxins are Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau.BotoxThe most famous Neurotoxin, Botox is a common (and quick!) procedure used to treat crow’s feet, forehead lines, laugh lines, and other signs of aging.DysportA similar Neurotoxin as Botox, Dysport is an injectable treatment that offers temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles. The treatment is injected directly into the target facial area to prevent muscle contraction.JeuveauThe newest Neurotoxin on the market, we’ve started to call Jeuveau, #Newtox! This FDA-approved treatment is used to treat moderate-to-severe frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and more.

Next up: Dermal Fillers
Unlike Neurotoxins that freeze the treated area, injectable fillers smooth out the treated area by (like the name suggests) filling in the skin. The core, active ingredient found in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally-occurring substance that can already be found in the skin. HA has the ability to store moisture and is responsible for giving the skin a hydrated and smooth look. You may have heard of this ingredient in skin care, but used topically it can’t restore lost volume. Injected, however, it can restore plumpness and replenish your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid. One injection can last up to a year and will add volume and decrease wrinkles depending on the injection site.
Juvéderm
Juvéderm can be used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and can also be used for lip augmentation.
Restylane
Similarly, the Restylane line of products is formulated to act like your body’s own naturally occurring hyaluronic acid and restore volume to your skin or add plumpness to the lips.
Finally, Biostimulators
Biostimulators are dermal fillers with a twist: utilizing poly-L-lactic acid the Biostimulator is a collagen stimulator that provides long-lasting results that can last up to two years. It can be used to treat moderate to severe folds and wrinkles.
In easy terms: Biostimulators work within the deep layers of your skin, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.
Sculptra
